Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste is illegal to dispose of in landfills. Hazardous waste can be harmful to humans and the environment. Examples of common household hazardous waste are motor oil, paint, household cleaning supplies, pesticides, sharps and pharmaceutical waste. Illegally disposing of these items can result in harmful effects on the environment and harsh fines. Read below for ways to properly dispose of your household hazardous waste. Visit the Universal Waste and Electronic Waste pages for information on proper disposal of these additional types of hazardous waste.
Used Oil & Oil Filter Recycling Are you a DIY’er? Do you do your own oil changes on your vehicles? Once the filter bag and oil jug are full, set them both next to your recycle bin on your regular pick-up day to be emptied and returned to you.
Or if you prefer to take in your own oil and filter, click on the link below to find an oil collection center near you that will recycle it for you.
Did you know that most car makers suggest more than 3 months or 3,000 miles in between oil changes? Following the 3,000-mile myth generates millions of gallons of unnecessary waste oil every year, which can pollute California’s natural resources.
Oil doesn’t wear out, it just gets dirty! Recycling your car’s used motor oil it into re-refined oil, which uses less energy than new oil production and is an environmentally beneficial method of managing used oil. Used oil goes through the same process as crude oil and must pass the same tests as virgin oil. Visit the websites below for more information on re-refined oil.
Sharps Waste Beginning September 1, 2008, the California Health and Safety Code makes it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling containers and requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container.
Free Sharps Containers at Local Pharmacies: Yolo County received a grant from the Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery to purchase sharps containers and make them available at locations throughout Yolo County in order to keep sharps waste out of the landfill. The containers have been distributed at local pharmacies in Woodland and are available for free to the public. The mail-back containers get shipped back in its postage-paid box it came in, while the other containers can be dropped off at the Yolo County Central Landfill during the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days or at a local sharps collection site.

Pharmaceutical Drug Waste Scientific studies show sometimes alarming levels of human medicines in U.S. waterways. Sewage treatment systems cannot remove these medicines from wastewater, and they end up in lakes and rivers, where they can adversely affect aquatic animals. For this reason, medications should not be flushed down the drain. See below to find out where to take unwanted or expired medications.
